Trail Head Directions:
The trailhead is about 6 miles from Marquette center. Head north on 550 towards Big Bay for about 3.5 miles and you will see the large parking area for Sugarloaf Mountain on your right. The first parking area is newly constructed as of 2020. There is a second parking area further north, but the instructions here begin at the first parking area. Both parking areas are very similar in length and get you to the top of the mountain.
.
Trail Description:
Start from the trailhead (P) and begin your hike. Bear right at the first intersection (1) and continue on. Bear right again at the next intersection (2) to ascend several sets of stairs to the top (3). There are multiple viewing platforms at the top along with a memorial to Alanson Bartlett King who established one of the first Boy Scouts groups in the 1920s and died in World War I.
Retrace your steps to head back, or for a longer hike, turn right when you get back down to (2) and walk down towards the second parking area. When you reach the second parking area, continue along the “easy” trail to get back to the first parking area. This adds about 1/3rd of a mile to the hike.
