1. Food

Whether it’s a day-hike or an overnight backpacking trip, no one wants to be hungry.  Hiawatha Hiking Company takes steps to make sure this doesn’t happen!  We have carefully created menus and distribute food prior to commencement of all of our trips.  We also keep your dietary restrictions in mind when choosing healthy, delicious foods that will give you the energy and nourishment you need, whether it’s on a shorter jaunt through the woods to visit inland lakes and streams, or a 3-night backpacking trip with views of the colossal Pictured Rocks!

2.  Planning

When finding yourself in a new place, especially with limited time, you want to see the highlights without worrying that you’ve missed something.  We understand that and have chosen hiking routes that showcase the beauty of the area.  From the sandstone of Pictured Rocks, the rich history of Grand Island, inland lakes and rivers of the Beaver Basin Wilderness and Hiawatha National Forest, we have something for everyone!  We tell you where and when to meet us and will guide you through your adventure.  We have also booked all campsites, ferries, and shuttles!

3.  Navigation

When unfamiliar with an area, you may have concerns about getting lost or having an impromptu overnight stay in the wilderness…  On our group tours, you don’t need to worry about this.  Perhaps you are traveling in a small group or by yourself and are uncomfortable being out in the woods.  Our experienced guides have thousands of miles of trails under their belts and are familiar with the routes.  Their welcoming attitudes will put you at ease.  There is no reason to be scared or worried in the woods!

4.  Gear

Perhaps you are new to hiking, backpacking, or camping and are unsure what to bring.  Leave these concerns to us!  We give you direct instructions for what to bring on our day-hikes and overnight trips (water, clothing, toiletries, etc.).  Don’t have backpacking gear?  Don’t worry!  We have top-of-the-line, lightweight gear (backpacks, tents, sleeping bags/pads) that you can rent.  We also provide cooking stoves/utensils as well as a group water filter.

5.  Getting the most out of your visit!

There is a lot to see and do in the Munising-area of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  With so many options, you may be concerned that you’ll miss something.  Leave those concerns to us, as we ensure you make the most of your visit.  We have selected excellent hiking routes for you to choose from.  You can choose a trip that highlights the Pictured Rocks (Miner’s Castle, Chapel Rock, sandy beaches, Lake Superior, log slide) or the Hiawatha National Forest (Grand Island or Bruno’s Run).  If you are new to hiking or backpacking, we will teach you the basics, so you don’t have to worry about being stuck in the woods with the wrong clothes or food.  We also provide information on local history and geology on our tours.  We can even recommend local restaurants to dine in!

Leave all of the planning and logistics to us so you can focus on having fun and enjoying one of the most scenic areas in the Midwest!
